Pet grooming that’s self-service

Pet grooming that’s self-service

Grooming by Linda B., a pet-grooming salon in Roseburg, had been strictly full-service for 10 years until owner Linda Bruinsma decided to let customers do their own scrubbing, as some had requested.

Dog owners can now wash Spot or Fluffy at Grooming by Linda B.’s self-service pet wash, 1947 S.E. Stephens St. The cost is about half the price of full-service, and ranges between $8 and $20.

The self-service provides luxury accommodations, Bruinsma said, such as raised tubs, all-natural shampoo, aprons, towels, brushes, cologne, conditioners and dryers — without having to clean up.

Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, and Saturday by appointment.

Information: 677-9620.

FLEE THE COOP POLL: Drew Carey, pegged to replace Bob Barker on “The Price is Right,” is currently busy throwing obscure questions to guests on his show “Power of 10,” such as, what percentage of Americans have quit a job after their first day of work?

The answer from Wednesday night’s episode — a cold hard stat with a small margin of error, I’m sure — is 16 percent.

TIGHT IN THE COLLAR: Word is former News-Review business writer Paul Craig is settling in to his new job at The Columbian in Vancouver, but is unsettled by the dress code, which requires him to wear a tie to work every day.

Craig claims he will eventually loosen the standard, and don a necktie only for interviews with emissaries and dignitaries.

Join fight against dogfighting

Join fight against dogfighting

August 24, 2007 - 10:44PM

Michael Vick is scheduled to enter a guilty plea to dogfighting charges Monday, but that’s only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this blood sport.

The Humane Society of the United States has aided law enforcement in breaking up at least 32 dogfighting rings in 15 states in the last month.

They estimate there are 40,000 professional dogfighters in the country, and an additional 100,000 who engage in it periodically.

“For us, the Vick case has had tremendous value,” Jeff Dorson, a Louisiana Humane Society official, told The Washington Post. “We’ve been trying to tell the public how typical this is, how widespread it is, the horrors the animals go through. . . . It’s opened the curtain so everyone can see what’s going on.”

The HSUS has a campaign to send letters of thanks to the federal attorneys who worked on the Vick case. To add your name to the thank-you list, go to hsus.org.

The organization offers $5,000 rewards for information leading to the arrest and conviction of dogfighters.

Contributions to the Animal Cruelty Response and Reward Fund can be made at the Web site. Donations can also be made by calling 1-301-258-8276 or by mailing to: Humane Society of the United States, Dept. GABA7Y, HSUS, 2100 L St. NW, Washington, D.C., 20037.

IN CASE OF FIRE

Here’s a way to help safeguard your pets if there’s a fire: window decals that will alert firefighters that you have animals inside.

The 4-by-5-inch decals from Pet Safety Alert Inc. are bright red and have a picture of a Dalmatian nicknamed “Rescue Rover” wearing a fire hat. The decal says “Please Save Our Pets.”

There are places to write how many cats, dogs and birds are in the house, plus a box to indicate other types of pets. The decals are made of staticcling vinyl and come two to a package for $4.99. To order, call 1-561-502-2194 or send an e-mail to info@petalertdecal.com.

DOG-COMPANION RESEARCH

About 47 percent of dog owners consider the needs of their pets as passengers when choosing a vehicle, according to a survey conducted by the American Kennel Club.

“Dog ownership heavily influences both lifestyle and purchasing habits,” AKC spokeswoman Lisa Peterson said in a press release.

Other findings:

- Two out of three owners purchased an average of 9.3 balls for their dogs to play with in the past 12 months.

- About 42 percent of female respondents said they own a dog to enhance health and reduce stress.

- 99 percent of respondents said they own a dog for companionship, and 88 percent regard their dog as a beloved family member.

The survey is geared to those in the pet industry and can be purchased online at akc.org/survey21 for $650.
